As a Christian it is not always easy to identify the most important things in our lives and remain focused. There is a delicate balance with our families, church, jobs, relationships and personal desires. However, I believe we have something our Heavenly Father has called us to do while on this earth. We each have a “main thing” entrusted to us.  This is the thing we will give an account of at the judgment day.

I read the following story about the London Transit Authority. They received many complaints their buses were driving past customers who were standing at the bus stops.  The Tranist Authority put this explanation in the paper that has become infamous with public relations departments.  The explanation said, “It is impossible for us to maintain our schedule if we are always having to stop and pick up passengers.”  Clearly, the agency had forgotten its purpose!

Proverbs 14:15 says, “A prudent man gives (or considers) thought to his steps.” If we are prudent, it is wise to periodically examine our life style and see if we are living with eternal purpose. Are we keeping the main thing front and center in our lives.

You see, we either fill our days with direction from the Lord or we fill it with our selfish desires. I’ve noticed there are individuals who express regret at the end of their days. Here are a few things I’ve heard: too much time spent working, too much time spent on unfulfilled relationships, worrying about things that never happen, staying in a vocation they hated, squandering their time in front of the television or computer and a failure to value their family.

We can apply our heart to wisdom and learn to number our days according to Psalm ninety. I am the only one who can make changes to my life. I recognize my time is a valuable and finite resource. I encourage you to make the main thing, the main thing!
