Years ago I read a quote by Thomas A Edison that went something like this: “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Such a true statement! When the hurricane Harvey hit Texas our world changed dramatically. The nonprofit I founded, Operation Refuge, along with others, was found in the middle of many days of opportunities and plenty of hard work.
I am very thankful to have the strength and perservance to stay the course. From all over the nation our organization received food, supplies and water for those displaced from the storm. I thought we were almost at the end when I received a telephone call after church last Sunday. A local ministry had more than they could use and we were blesssed again.
This afternoon I was finishing grading some papers for our bible college at church when I heard a knock at the office door. Everyone had left for the day, and I am glad I was still there. A man was outside with a borrowed bicycle and shared he hadn’t eaten or drank anything in days. I quickly gave him a bottle of water, loaded him and the bicycle in the back of my truck and drove to our food pantry.
We always keep items for the homeless in our community at the pantry. He asked me for some canned chicken but told me he didn’t have a can opener. I was not surprised when I found one immediately and filled a bag with enough food to last a few days. All the hard work from previous days provided provision once again. Do you have any overalls?
